Textbook Information
Thoroughly updated for its Fifth Edition, this quick-reference handbook provides complete information on the major classes of drugs used in current psychiatric practice—including a new chapter on psychotropics for treating substance use disorders. Coverage of each drug class includes mechanisms of action, indications, therapeutic uses, side effects, interactions, and caveats regarding special populations such as pregnant and elderly patients. The book gives specific prescribing recommendations—including dosage and how long to use—for individual drugs. Tables provide at-a-glance information and a disease-specific table of contents directs readers quickly to relevant drug chapters.

Description:This is the latest up-to-date quick reference on the major classes of psychotherapeutics used in clinical practice. The fifth edition has been expanded from the previous edition to include sections on drugs used for the treatment of substance abuse, sleep, dementia, and attention deficit disorder.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, easy-to-use reference of psychotherapeutic drugs that are commonly used in clinical practice by the clinician.
Audience:It is targeted at anyone dealing with psychotropics and mental disorders such as students, residents, clinicians, and nurses.
Features:This is essentially a handbook/pocket reference of vital clinical information on the major classes of psychotherapeutic drugs. It has a very practical and clinical format in contrast to a theoretical psychopharmacology book. Drugs are based on clinical disorders with a nice description of the clinical disorders, pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action, indications etc. While most of the information is evidence-based, clinical consensus is taken when controlled trials are not available. The authors address difficult clinical situations and give practical information on overcoming these situations that we all see in clinical settings. The authors take into account the variance that we see in patient populations and advise based on this. Information is presented in easy to read graphs, charts and tables for quick reference. For a pocket reference, this book contains a wealth of practical information.
Assessment:The book is written in a very practical,user-friendly clinical format differentiating itself from others in this category. It is an absolute must-have pocket reference for anyone dealing with patients in a clinical setting.
