The book's easy-access format provides key information on fractures in adults and in children, including epidemiology, anatomy, mechanism of injury, radiologic evaluation, classification, treatment, and management of complications. New and updated features include a more standardized approach to fracture classification...specific imaging guidelines...an explanation of the limits of closed treatment...a range of treatment options and guides for "after care"...and anatomic overviews.

    Annotation

Thoroughly updated for its Third Edition, this pocket-sized go-anywhere guide is the ideal on-the-spot reference for residents and practitioners seeking fast facts on fracture management and classification. The book's easy-access format features numerous charts, tables, diagrams, illustrations, and bulleted lists. Two new chapters in this edition cover closed reduction, casting, and traction, and orthopaedic analgesia. Handbook of Fractures, Third Edition will also be available for PDAs. Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Edward Abraham, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:This handbook deals with the management of fractures in adults and children.
Purpose:It is intended to serve as a quick reference for orthopedists.
Audience:The main audience includes orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents, but emergency and trauma physicians can use it too. Dr. Koval is Chief of the Fracture Service and Dr. Zuckerman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases. Both authors are nationally and internationally known in the field of orthopedics.
Features:The book covers all fractures and dislocations of the extremities and axial skeleton. A separate section is devoted to fractures in children. Each chapter covers epidemiology, anatomy, mechanism of injury, clinical and radiological evaluation, classification, treatment and complications. No references are provided.
Assessment:This is a very well done handbook on fractures. It covers all the essentials needed to manage a given fracture in a business-like fashion. Readers have the choice of another handbook with the same title edited by Perry and Elstrom (McGraw-Hill, 2000) , but that work deals only with adult fractures. Koval and Zuckerman are to be congratulated for an excellent job in redoing their book. I strongly recommend it to all orthopedists and orthopedic residents without any reservations.
