Synopsis

This pocket (5.5x8.5") guide summarizes basic principles of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances and related disorders for nursing students and professionals. A developmental approach is used to provide examples across the lifespan that illustrate common health problems associated with imbalances. Nursing assessments, diagnoses, interventions, and rationales are presented in tabular form for quick retrieval. Kee is associate professor emerita in the College of Health and Nursing Sciences at the University of Delaware. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Students are sure to achieve success with comprehending the complexities of fluids and electrolytes through this new two-color, highly illustrated sixth edition.

Joyce Melius

This is a concise review of complex normal and abnormal states of fluid balance and the relationships with electrolytes and acid-base balance. Pathophysiology, nursing process, assessment, diagnoses, and interventions with rationale are also reviewed. There are special implications presented for all age groups. The objective is to present a quick reference guide of basic principles of fluid, electrolyte, and acid base balance and relationships. The authors use a developmental approach across the lifespan. The nursing process is presented. These are poorly understood concepts in general and this guide is quite helpful. The editors concisely cover all stated objectives Anyone working ""in the field"" where a quick reference is needed will find this text helpful. Students trying to understand fluids and electrolytes will also find it helpful as will faculty preparing classroom content and presentations. All aspects of fluid management in the body are discussed. Normal and abnormal states, all electrolytes (cations and anions), acid-base interactions, and fluid shifts are reviewed. Children and the aging adult are discussed in separate chapters. The nursing process with rationale is included in each chapter. There are color tables, which are concise, easy to read and sum up the content well. This handbook is a well-organized, brief overview of fluid electrolyte and acid-base principles and problems. I could use the book when I need a quick reference or a simple explanation for a student. The book is small and easy to read, organized clearly, and specific information is easy to find.
