Synopsis

Fletcher Moon has never been like other kids. For one thing, he has had to suffer the humiliating nickname "Half Moon" because of his short stature. But the real reason Fletcher is different is that ever since he was a baby, he's had the nose for sniffing out mysteries. And let's just say, it's not a skill that has been appreciated by many people, including his own family.

That doesn't bother Fletcher, though. After graduating at the top of his Internet class, he is officially certified as the youngest detective in the world. He even has a silver-plated detective's badge to prove it. Everything is going along fine until two things happen: a classmate hires him to solve a crime, and his prized badge is stolen. All signs point to the town's most notorious crime family, the Sharkeys.

As Fletcher follows the clues, evidence of a conspiracy begins to emerge. But before he can crack the case, Fletcher finds himself framed for a serious crime. To clear his name, he will have to pair up with the unlikeliest of allies and go on the run from the authorities. Fletcher has twelve hours to find the guilty party -- or he is the guilty party.

Child Magazine

Freshly graduated from an Internet detective academy, 12-year-old Fletcher Moon gets his first bona fide client: April Devereaux, the snobby "head of an entire tribe of Barbies." The case? Find out who stole April's most prized possession -- a lock of hair from a pop star. The plot thickens when Fletcher's badge is stolen and he's framed for a crime. Self-confident enough to poke fun at his own gumshoe geekiness ("After all, when you've come face-to-face with the dark side of the school yard, life doesn't hold many surprises"), Fletcher makes an utterly likable private eye. The hilarious ensemble of characters includes a gaggle of over-the-top, ultra-femme girls and a psycho principal who likes to draw mean pictures of her students. The razor-sharp wit of Colfer, the author of the Artemis Fowl series, will have young sleuths clamoring for more Half-Moon cases. (Ages 8 to 12)

Biography

In the summer of 2001, Eoin Colfer was a teacher in Ireland who had just finished up a book called Artemis Fowl -- about a boy in search of fairy gold. Colfer struck gold himself when his high-tech fairy tale starring the intrepid 12-year old "criminal mastermind" became a blockbuster bestseller that many considered to be the heir apparent to Harry Potter.

September 30, 2007: I stayed up until 12:30 to read this, and then forced myself to go to bed. It gets you wanting to read more around the middle of the book, even though the beginning is not exactly super. I would reccomend this book for someone who likes to laugh, as Eoin Colfer brings a good mystery to funny situations.
