    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Katie L Dennis, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This volume in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series, authored by an international panel of experts, focuses on common and challenging entities in gynecologic pathology.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of gynecologic disease from a surgical pathology perspective, while also touching on clinical presentation and management.
Audience:It is aimed primarily at pathology residents and fellows in training, but will also be useful to practitioners of general surgical pathology and specialists in gynecologic pathology.
Features:Chapters detailing pathologic entities by site are nicely laid out. While the use of immunohistochemical stains is described in individual chapters, the addition of a separate immunohistochemical chapter is a useful and convenient reference. The most unique aspect of the book is the inclusion of clinical and pathological fact sheets which allow quick access to the main features of a particular disease. These fact sheets cover both clinical points, such as disease incidence, risk factors, age, prognosis and treatment, and pathologic features, including gross and microscopic findings, special stains, and differential diagnosis. The text boxes are highlighted in different colors, which makes them stand out nicely from the text. These features make this an ideal book for exam preparation, yet the information is practical and topical enough to be used in daily practice as well.
Assessment:This is a user friendly book written in an easy to read format, yet it includesall the necessary diagnostic and clinical details. The large size and high quality of the pictures, along with the tables and quick reference fact sheets, enhance the aesthetically pleasing and easy to follow design. This would be a great reference for the study of gynecologic pathology for pathologists in training, as well as valuable book to have handy for practicing pathologists.
