Synopsis

Eva and Jake Kelly live the high life in Manhattan, with a beautiful apartment and successful careers in fashion design and car sales, respectfully.  But they get their thrills from the con. They learned a long time ago they can extort wads of cash from drunk men who are in town on business and away from their wives.  But when one of their marks turns on them after they demand blackmail money, their fun days look to be over.  Until Eva comes up with a plan.  With the help of their friends, they rob a cruise ship en route to Miami, turn the tables on their mark and his wife, and head full on into life on the lam.

Kirkus Reviews

A couple of seasoned con artists tackle their toughest challenge to date. For ten years, Eva and Jake Kelly have been hustling to support their flashy lifestyle. They rationalize their crimes by blaming their impoverished upbringing: They steal to make up for all the things they were deprived of as children. Reveling in their riches, they're thrilled to put their troubled pasts behind them and enjoy splashy shopping sprees. Another plus to thieving is the role it plays in this oversexed duo's extremely physical relationship; ripping off unsuspecting victims serves as foreplay. It seems inevitable that Eva and Jake's luck will run out, and sure enough, greed gets the best of these thrill-seekers when a Las Vegas con goes bad. Their mark, a Midwestern businessman, turns out to be a poor choice; he's married to an FBI agent, who hatches a plan to turn would-be blackmailers Jake and Eva into her pawns. If they don't help her steal a cache of diamonds from a South American drug lord, she threatens to put them behind bars for extortion and theft. The plot, silly from the beginning, becomes simply ridiculous as the Kellys board the very swank cruise ship on which the drug lord is transporting his stash. Hill appears to have done little research to support this crime caper. She glosses over details about locks, computers codes and counterfeiting, unavoidable elements of modern action and suspense novels, in favor of sex scenes. The author does have a knack for getting down and dirty in the bedroom, but the story is otherwise a snooze. Unimaginative plot and tiresome writing leave the reader stranded at sea. After 28 novels (Divas, Inc., 2004, etc.), maybe Hill just has no more tricks up hersleeve.

September 02, 2006: Eva and Jake Kelly are considered the perfect power couple as they live an upper class Manhattan lifestyle and obviously love one another. Most people who know the pair envy their loving closeness while simply assuming the dynamic duo fund their standard of living via their respective successful careers. --- The loving part is true as Eva and Jake truly do and do not hide their affection. However, the affluence aspect is a bit different than anyone perceives as the Kellys employ a secret method to earn income way beyond their day jobs. Eve picks up affluent drunken businessman so that Jake can photograph them in embarrassing positions blackmail pays the bills. However, this time they select the wrong victim as he refuses to fold over to their extortion. Instead he is coming for the Kellys who are caught in a wider con that could prove fatal. --- Ethics aside, this is a wild thriller in which whatever the Kellys do seems to go wrong placing them increasingly in danger from a no nonsense Type A individual. Surprisingly even with their extortionist victims funding their elitist lifestyle, readers will empathize with the lead duo when they select the wrong victim. Mindful of Fun with Dick and Jane, Eva and Jake are a fascinating married couple who combine love, sex, and larceny into a delightful suspense. --- Harriet Klausner
