Freud once again explains the relationships between the ego, superego, and external groups and their influences on human behavior. I especially liked his examples of the roles played by 'leader' and the 'hypnotist' to the primal horde example and their relationship to the superego/ego ideal, as well as the epic poet's truth behind the 'hero' of myth.

Synopsis

The question he addresses here is, What are the emotional bonds that hold collective entities, such as an army and a church, together? It is a fruitful question, and Freud offers some interesting answers. But Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego stands chiefly as an invitation to further psychoanalytic exploration.
