    Synopsis

On a quiet autumn afternoon in 1944, nine-year-old Morris Bird III decides to visit a friend who lives on the other side of town. So he grabs the handle of his red wagon and, with his little sister in tow, begins an incredible pilgrimage across Cleveland . . . and out of childhood forever.

Set against the backdrop of one of the worst industrial disasters in American history, Don Robertson's enduring, beloved masterwork is a remarkable story of destiny, bravery, and responsibility, as fresh and relevant as when it first appeared in print.

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread: The story is as whimsical and nostalgic as the title.by nicjojen

August 06, 2009: I so thoroughly enjoyed this story that I had to access the inter-state lending library to read the next two in this touching trilogy, as the sequels were still out of print at the time (they have since reprinted them and are available). This is the story of a little boy's journey to attain bravery and proves himself more generous and resilient than most adults would be in similar circumstances. It made me yearn to be young and adventerous again! The added interest is the real life historical event as the background. Don't forget to read the sequels to Morris Bird III's adventures into adolescence. A wonderful book you will want to keep on the shelf and read again!

I Also Recommend: Greatest Thing That Almost Happened, The Sum and Total of Now.
