Everyone needs love. Everyone desires love. But not everyone understands love. In fact, love is probably the most misunderstood subject in history. In his first encyclical, Pope Benedict sets out to help clarify the meaning of love. He examines the nature of various kinds of lovehuman love and divine love, Eros, affection, and charity. He writes beautifully and inspirationally of how man was made for love, by ye God who was love, the god who became one of us out of loveJesus Christ. In the second part of the encyclical, Benedict addresses the Church's practice of love, including the relationship between justice and charity, as well as the call of every Catholic to serve others in love. The Pope's "love letter" to humanity is remarkably accessible and timely.

September 03, 2009: This book, known as an Encyclical, is stunning in its presentation and fluency. I cannot think of a better person on this earth, that is currently living, than the Pope to write on such an important topic that is quintessential to Christianity. Protestants will get as much out of this as Catholics and all denominations of faith will find a home here. The very title, "God Is Love," says it all, this is so fundamental to humanity that people search their entire lives for this love, that can only be achieved in God. With so much of religion conflicting with science, it is often perceived that the two cannot co-exist in perfect harmony, which can be achieved.
Religion can be a very touchy subject, with such broad interpretations, and just as many misinterpretations, this book puts forth the essential concept of what human beings strive for in the very meaning of existence, love. There are those in our society that can warp the very fabric of this most core concept, turning love into hate, understanding into not, and turning the more educated Christians against themselves because they are so conflicted with what is taught in college and what is taught among those that choose to preach hate instead of love, which is what God is, God does not hate, He does not hate anyone for any reason, Hate is in intrinsic property of human beings, God is above this, God loves, God loves forever, unconditionally, and unequivocally, this book claims this and backs it up with substantial evidence. As Pope Benedict explains, love is central to humanity, central to the very essence of being human, that which separates us from the other animals in the world, that which puts humans on a higher level than any other creature, even more than our use of opposable thumbs, enormous capacity for the nuances of language, the ability to think rationally and logically, the ability for utilizing tool implements, and even more divisional than our cognition, intonations of speech, and the proclivity to construct pyramids, sky scrapers, radio telescopes, spacecraft, the recognition of high-energy astrophysics, and on and on through the entirety of human existence. Love is more important than any other entity in the universe, it is what drives us, what innervates us, what gets us to rise above our circumstances and become something great and help the citizens of humanity, in all of its incarnations. God Is Love, Love is found in God, and by extension, He has given this to us, to love our spouses, our children, our parents, and everything else in this world that can be loved. This Encyclical purports such an incredible and immense connection with the God of humanity, and by this love in God, we have this love for everyone else in the world. Michael WadeReader Rating:
