Synopsis

Laurel Gray Hawthorne needs to make things pretty. Coming from a family with a literal skeleton in their closet, she's developed this talent all her life, whether helping her willful mother to smooth over the reality of her family's ugly past, or elevating humble scraps of unwanted fabric into nationally acclaimed art quilts.

Her sister Thalia, an impoverished "Actress" with a capital A, is her opposite, and prides herself in exposing the lurid truth lurking behind life's everyday niceties. And while Laurel's life was neatly on track, a passionate marriage, a treasured daughter, and a lovely home in lovely suburban Victorianna, everything she holds dear is thrown into question the night she is visited by an apparition in her bedroom. The ghost appears to be her 14-year-old neighbor Molly Dufresne, and when Laurel follows this ghost , she finds the real Molly floating lifeless in her swimming pool. While the community writes the tragedy off as a suicide, Laurel can't. Reluctantly enlisting Thalia's aid, Laurel sets out on a life-altering investigation that triggers startling revelations about her own guarded past, the truth about her marriage, and the girl who stopped swimming.

Richer and more rewarding than any story from Joshilyn Jackson, THE GIRL WHO STOPPED SWIMMING is destined both to delight Jackson's loyal fans and capture a whole new audience.

Publishers Weekly

Laurel, the center of Jackson's emotionally taut third novel, has a seemingly picture-perfect life, but when her daughter's best friend accidentally drowns in their pool and appears to Laurel in spirit form, things unravel quickly. Jackson's honey-sweet tones heat up into panic and confusion as everything Laurel depends on falls away. While set in the languid deep South, the pace is rapid. Jackson's reading keeps things brisk without going too swiftly. Jackson's excellent reading allows characters' voices to reveal much about their histories and personalities: Laurel's gentle but determined manner, her outrageously funny sister's sarcasm, the thick drawl of an impoverished girl visiting from Alabama. A brief interview with Jackson at the end offers some insight into the book's genesis and development and into her writing habits. Simultaneous release with the Grand Central hardcover (Reviews, Oct. 29). (Mar.)

Biography

If Joshilyn Jackson knows one thing, that would have to be what it’s like to be southern. Born in Atlanta to a family of “wild fundamentalists,” Jackson writes smart, funny, dark works of the southern gothic sort. Her debut novel, Gods in Alabama, was a major success, and she's serving up her second helping of southern-fried wit in Between, Georgia.

August 17, 2008: Jackson's grasp of the new south, and the North Florida I live in, is spot-on. I loved the protagonist's desire to make everything oh-so-tidy and oh-so-safe and pretty for her daughter, and the way that reality kept snaking in under the polished doors of her carefully gated community. This book explores class conflict and the yearning of mothers to protect their children in a complex, compelling and satisfying way.

July 02, 2008: This book has honestly been one of the best books I have read in a while. It is the type of book that keeps you wondering 'whose done it,' which keeps you intrigued and is hard to put down. Plus, I love knowing it has that southern touch to it, which is close to home. Don't tell, but there were times this book took presidence over my studying and homework 'shame on me.' I look forward to reading more of Ms. Jacksons books. Thank you for inspiring me to start reading again.
