Synopsis

Entourage meets The Hills meets Perez Hilton in this novel, now in paperback!

Publishers Weekly

The newest rich girls series from de la Cruz (Au Pairs, Blue Bloods) cuts between the points of view of three teenagers: pop star Devon, celebutante Livia and Casey, assistant to singer Summer Garland, Devon's rival. The three girls converge on the French island of Saint-Tropez for the summer-where egos collide and designer outfits compete on a regular basis-and manage to become friends. Tabloid excerpts, blog entries and magazine articles between chapters provide a paparazzi-eye view of the girls' back-stories and report juicy, hyped-up gossip on their nights out, drinks imbibed, possible love affairs and exaggerated, nasty interactions. All three struggle with insecurities about their success (or lack of it) under the constant watch of the gossip-hungry. Those hoping for a new spin on the genre needn't bother, though there is enough boy-drama, label dropping, club hopping and backstabbing to satisfy those addicted to Gossip Girl-style series-and better yet, it all takes place on the French Riviera. Ages 14-up.

November 03, 2009: I really enjoyed Girl Stays in the Picture. It was a very clever commentary on popular culture and celebrities, and the plotline was very engaging. The story focuses on three girls: Devon, a pop starlet fresh out of rehab; Livia, an Oscar winning producer's daughter; and Casey, assistant to Devon's rival. The trio of heroines all find themselves in the south of France where Devon is shooting a movie. The problem is the studio doesn't trust Devon after her hard-partying ways, and her part in the movie continues to grow smaller and smaller. Meanwhile Livia tries to identify herself now that she is no longer a fat girl and Casey falls for a charming Brittish movie star her best friend- and current emloyer- is dating. There is plenty of drama and an abundance of love interests. Dividing the chapters are gossip columns and papparazi reports, chronicling the exciting summer. Many of the books characters are thinly disguised celebrities most readers will recognize. The book is very current, all of it taking place during summer 2009. The characters are likable and the writing is always witty. As the plot thickens, readers will find themselves turning the pages more and more eagerly. Girl Stays in the Picture is a deliciously contemporary novel, that is as hot as the girls' sweltering summer in Saint-Tropez. It will leave you dying for a sequel.

I Also Recommend: The Luxe (Luxe Series #1), The Princess Diaries (Princess Diaries Series #1), Summer Girls, Au Pairs (Au Pairs Series #1), Sun-kissed (The Au Pairs Series #3).
