Synopsis

Designed to maximize visual learning, this Sixth Edition features a new art program and an integrated, cohesive, student-focused suite of multimedia products. Brand-new icons direct students to free video clips and online activities. New concept maps walk students through the nursing process for selected case-study patients. Unexpected outcomes are now included in skills descriptions. Like previous editions, the text maintains its unique holistic "blended skills" approach to nursing care and focuses on case-based learning and critical thinking.

A back-of-book CD-ROM includes video clips and a Spanish-English audio glossary. A companion online course is available free with purchase of the text.

Annotation

Revised to emphasize critical thinking, this Fifth Edition is the most engaging, student-friendly, and comprehensive fundamentals textbook for beginning nursing students. The unique, holistic "blended skills" approach to nursing care integrates technical, cognitive, ethical/legal, and interpersonal skills. Each Fifth Edition chapter opens with three real-world cases, which are used throughout the chapter as examples. Reflective Practice boxes written by Carol Taylor's students describe realistic situations and ask challenging questions. The updated coverage includes discussions of evidence-based practice and a new chapter on complementary and alternative modalities. A back-of-book CD-ROM has tutorials on NCLEX innovative items, and fluid and electrolyte balance.

Mary McCall Swint

This is an organized, attractively designed, hardbound fundamental textbook of nursing. The purpose is to provide healthcare providers with a holistic, diverse, scientific, technical base of knowledge with a commitment to interpersonal caring and accountability. It has been written for nurses, especially beginning nurses, to enhance their nursing practice in traditional and nontraditional healthcare settings. However, other healthcare students and advanced practice nurses could use the text as well. The book features organized units, color-coordinated charts and topical information, definitions of terms in the inside cover of the book, a holistic approach, care competencies, inclusion of diverse population groups, traditional and nontraditional settings, communication skills, related research, in-depth glossary, and updated references. This highly readable text presents the content logically and accurately. This excellent textbook is of higher quality than other current textbooks on fundamental nursing. Information has been written to provide the learner with a systematic, logical, and sequential format. Each chapter has an extended overview with objectives and key terms, key points, guidelines for care, and a bibliography. All these features enhance the beginning student's attention span and motivation to learn. There are no gaps in the written material. It would have been interesting to know what the nursing practice standards of nursing associations in other countries are. This textbook would be valuable to students.
