Description:This is a concise presentation of the imaging findings associated with common disease entities of the alimentary system and associated organs. The book offers a generous allotment of high quality images and introductory level text to present the essentials of gastrointestinal imaging.
Purpose:The purpose is to introduce the essential concepts and findings in the field of gastrointestinal imaging to students, residents, and physicians who may frequently order these examinations or interpret the results but who do not have expertise in radiology. In the preface, the authors make particular mention of their intent to delineate the indications for imaging in the evaluation of gastrointestinal disease and the inherent limitations of the studies in providing definitive diagnoses. The authors have succeeded in producing a book that presents the imaging findings of common gastrointestinal pathology at a level of depth appropriate to those who are not imaging experts. Unfortunately, the authors seem to have fallen short of the mark with respect to emphasizing the clear indications for each study and their inherent limitations.
Audience:According to the authors, the book is intended for medical students, residents, and physicians who order the examinations but are not imaging experts themselves. The book addresses the intended audience. The authors are credible authorities.
Features:The book covers the major anatomical structures of the gastrointestinal system including the associated organs (liver, pancreas, spleen) . Concisetext in each section offers brief descriptions of the general pathophysiology of each disease or anomaly and the associated radiographic findings. The book provides introductory level insight to the materials and methods of common examinations. The images are numerous, relevant, and of very high quality. These, combined with the logical organization of topics and complete but concise discussions, are the strong points of the book.
Assessment:This is a high quality introductory book. Its strength lies mainly in the number and quality of its images and it is the ideal size to introduce the topic without overwhelming readers. The authors could have improved on their work by using more comparison tables. The book is on par with, or better than, other titles in this Fundamentals series.
