November 07, 2009: Okay, I wasn't so young but I was as an author when I was desperately rummaging through the shelves of a local Barnes and Nobles. I had just finished writing my second book and published my first. I had read numerous books on getting published and had made Richard Curtis my guru on that. Now I needed something else...something that spoke to a new writer withe little money.

This book was just the thing for me to get an idea of where to go next and to comfort my spirit that was rapidly learning that just writing a good book was not going to make me suddenly hoisted on the shoulders of the publishing world and hailed the next Haywood Smith or Pat Conroy. No, I was going to have to get off my duff and do some promotion. Carolyn gave me the "atta girl" and guidance I needed, then a boot out the door to work. That being said the next book I bought was A TIME IN PLACE. I was really into BIG LOVE at the time an was astounded at the range and diversity of Howard-Johnson. She has been such and inspiration to me, and I find myself constantly recommending her.

June 11, 2009: Are you a novice or established writer wondering if you are doing all you should to promote yourself and your book?

I thought sure I was on top of things until I read The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't by Carolyn Howard-Johnson. For starters, I thought I needed to have my book published before I could put together a media kit. I found out that I am wasting precious time by waiting. This book goes through the steps to help you build your kit using the credentials you've gained through your writing; it even tells you the order in which your kit should be assembled.

How about pitching to a publisher; do you feel confident you'll do the best you can to win that publisher over? Ms. Johnson makes it easy and explains the differences between pitching the media, the reader and the publishing industry.

Do you know what a tag line is and why you need one; how about branding? A professional mailing list was never on my radar until I read this book. Do you know who to place on yours?

The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't contains chapter after chapter of incredible information, everything from choosing the right conference, advice on signing contracts and what to do afterward; whether or not to hire a publicist and how to get reviewed by the "biggies".

I could go on and on, so impressed am I with yet another whopping success for Ms. Howard-Johnson. This book belongs on every writer's resource bookshelf and I highly recommend you add it to yours.
