    Synopsis

This is the book we all know and love by Marlo Thomas and her friends—brought to new life with brand new illustrations to captivate and inspire a new generation of readers on a journey of the heart. Whether you are opening Free to Be . . . You and Me for the first time or the one hundredth time you will be engaged and transformed by this newly beautifully illustrated compilation of inspirational stories, songs, and poems. The sentiments of thirty-five years ago are as relevant today as when this book was published. Celebrating individuality and challenging stereotypes empowers both children and adults with the freedom to be who they want to be and to have compassion and empathy for others who may be different. Working closely with Marlo and co-creator Carole Hart, Peter H. Reynolds, the New York Times Best Selling Children’s Book Author/Illustrator, conjured his whimsical drawings throughout the book bringing a new sense of unity and warmth to the pages. You will find yourself marveling at the illustrations, nodding in agreement with the stories and poems, and singing the words to all the classic songs! It is wonderful that the thoughts, ideas, and emotions the creators envisioned so many years ago can still have a magical effect on children today.

    Annotation

A number of stories, poems, and songs which demonstrate that people can choose to do or be whatever they desire.

    Erma Bombeck

"Marlo Thomas has gathered together some of the most noted disciples of human dignity preaching today...Gloria Steinem, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Shel Silverstein, Carl Reiner and Kurt Vonnegut Jr., to name a few. they have filled the book with songs to be played on your piano or guitar, poems to be read aloud or to yourself and stories often illustrated by the crayon crowd...all with the underlying theme...you are free to be yourself." Books of the Century, The New York Times, April, 1974

July 20, 2009: my sister gave this book to my daughters when it first came out. they really enjoyed it, but it somehow got lost during the last 30 years or so.

i now have 4 great grandchildren, and i hope they will enjoy and benefit from the newest edition as much as my kids did from the original.

I Also Recommend: Harry Potter Paperback Boxed Set (Books 1-7).

July 11, 2009: I own a paperback copy of this book from when I was young - I have shared it with my own kids who have enjoyed it greatly. The stories, the poetry, the dialogues between 2 characters written in letters or as a script....all entertaining and educational - this book was teaching tolerance before it was called "tolerance" in our world.

The anniversary edition is lovely. I still like the original.
