Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein when she was only eighteen. At once a Gothic thriller, a passionate romance, and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein. Obsessed with discovering "the cause of generation and life" and "bestowing animation upon lifelessmatter," Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature's hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.
Frankenstein, an instant bestseller and an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres, not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises rofound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature? In our age, filled with news of organ donation genetic engineering, and bio-terrorism, these questions are more relevant than ever.

November 19, 2009: Let me start by saying this is a GREAT book! It benefits from good pacing, an interesting protagonist, an original plot, and a strong play on morality. However, it is different from what you might expect if you are assuming it's close to the general plot of Frankenstein you've heard growing up.

The book focuses almost exclusively on the consequences of the monster, AFTER it is created. I won't go into details about the creation scene but it is less central than you might expect. The story really boils down to how both Dr. Frankenstein and his monster deal with their lives after the creation. This leads to major moral dilemmas for both, and a plot that gives both sides of the story, allowing you to decide the morality of the characters for yourself.

Frankenstein is a classic and ought to be near the top of your reading list if you haven't read it. It's a story that is referenced quite often in conversation and a good understanding of the story can come in handy.

September 05, 2009: I really enjoyed reading this original classic horror story. It was so much more than I expected. Not just a horror story, but also delves into the human psyche- including the theory of nature vs nurture. Frankenstein's Monster was a much more complex being in this story than in the movies. While he had a very dark side to his character, there was also intelligence, love, and hope. Under other circumstances- he could have become not only a miracle to the scientific world, but also could have been a great friend and role model to humanity. You really have to question who was the real monster in the story. The Barnes and Noble version of this story offers a lot of extras including a background around Mary Shelley's writing of this great novel.

I Also Recommend: Dracula (Barnes & Noble Classics Series).
