March 17, 2009: My husband loved this book as a child, and our daughters love it, too. Appropriate for 4-7 year olds. Easy for early readers.
A bit rough for the very young or very sensitive, as Ned falls from an airplane and gets chased by sharks and tigers, but the "fortunately... unfortunately..." events are funny enough to make it fun, and he does make it to his party in the end! I read it to my daughter's 4 year old preschool class last year, and the kids really liked it - especially the boys.Reader Rating:

February 26, 2003: This book is a great tool for teachers. It is fun for children to hear as a read-aloud and lends itself to many lessons. Its format can be used to make book reports, biographies, and auto-biographies, experience charts etc. For example a book report for Little Red Riding Hood may go something like this: Fortunately, Little Red Riding Hood was going to visit her grandmother. Unfortunately, she had to walk through the woods all alone. Fortunately, her mother told her not to speak to anyone. Unfortunately, she didn't listen. Etc. It's a fun way for students to present a book report. I was in a course for teachers of the gifted and the professor had us brainstorm ideas to use with this book. The teachers were very impressed with the book and many ran out to buy it right away. I highly recommend it.
