(Paperback - Workbook)
This workbook contains 400 board-type multiple-choice questions from the annual FOCUS Self-Assessment Examinations that can help psychiatrists prepare for examinations and identify areas for further study. The questions, developed by the FOCUS self-assessment board, are consistent in form and process with the questions used by high-stakes examinations. They cover important clinical areas of psychiatric practice and closely follow the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) outline of topics for the recertification examination in psychiatry.
The FOCUS Psychiatry Review is designed to test current knowledge and its clinical application. The workbook is flexible in format, allowing readers to use the educational approach that works best for them. Readers can review resource materials prior to answering questions, or they can use the workbook to review the references listed in the critiques after scoring test sections.
The workbook will be useful for anyone committed to lifelong learning in the fieldpsychiatric residents, practicing psychiatrists, and psychiatrists preparing for examinations.

Description:Developed as an "aid for psychiatrists' lifelong learning in the field," this book contains 400 examination-style, multiple choice questions complied from the American Psychiatric Association's annual self assessment examinations.
Purpose:This book addresses the need for psychiatrists to keep pace with the rapidly changing, ever-expanding field of knowledge in the practice of psychiatry.
Audience:While useful for residents preparing for in-service examinations (such as the PRITE) , or medical students preparing for their psychiatry shelf-exam, this book is primarily targeted at psychiatrists preparing for certification or recertification of their board status.
Features:Separated into two portions (the first with questions, the second with the answers and explanations with references for further information) , this book addresses most of the topics in the field related to a thorough review of material for a board-type examination. Particularly useful are the answer sheets, a one-page list of the answers, and an index of the questions by topic, all provided in the back of the book.
Assessment:I found this particular effort the most complete and accurate when compared to the actual board examination. The variety of questions testing knowledge of both psychopharmacology and psychotherapeutic techniques is outstanding, and degree of difficulty provides readers with an accurate assessment of their own knowledge base and highlights specific areas of needed improvement. This book is a must for those preparing forthe board examination or for recertification, but is also a useful tool for clinicians interested in maintaining their knowledge in this field, and it is well worth the price!

April 13, 2009: I just took my ABPN recertification exam, and this study guide was the most useful single reference material I used. The scope and difficulty level of the questions was well matched to the actual exam. Explanations for each answer are provided in the back, for quick reference. I highly recommend this book for review, and it comes with CME credit as well!
