    Synopsis

This little thing with the perfect face and hands doing nothing but counting on me. And me wanting nothing else but to run crying into my own mom's room and have her do the whole thing.

    It's not going to happen....

Bobby is your classic urban teenaged boy — impulsive, eager, restless. On his sixteenth birthday he gets some news from his girlfriend, Nia, that changes his life forever. She's pregnant. Bobby's going to be a father. Suddenly things like school and house parties and hanging with friends no longer seem important as they're replaced by visits to Nia's obstetrician and a social worker who says that the only way for Nia and Bobby to lead a normal life is to put their baby up for adoption.

With powerful language and keen insight, Johnson looks at the male side of teen pregnancy as she delves into one young man's struggle to figure out what "the right thing" is and then to do it. No matter what the cost.

November 16, 2009: I read this book for the first time in sixth grade. That was 5 years ago. Since then, I've read it around 13 times more. It's amazing. A book I could never get tired of. And even though I know what happens, it's still emotional and a great read. It tells of the boys struggles and it's..real, I guess I want to say. It's really great. Angela Johnson is an amazing author and I would recommend this book and any of her other books to anyone.

October 31, 2009: When I looked at the book cover for Angela Johnson's First Part Last, I felt like I could relate maybe not by having the baby but by the lifestyle the main character, Bobby, lives. I know it's kind of hard living in a place where it's referred to as the ghetto-where it seems people are always out to get you. The book itself sets a very good tone. It has its ups and downs where it seems that Bobby wants to give up and wishes he did things differently. Then it has its time when Bobby is staying by Feather's side no matter what the situation. The baby, Feather, was almost not born. They had every hard option to make about keeping her or having an abortion. Some examples of social setting in the book are that the main characters in the book are black. They both are 16 and still living with their parents. Life is about to change in a major way for them.
