INSIDER'S GUIDE TO EMERGENCY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP SUCCESSQUICK FIX FOR THE CLERKSHIPREAL ANSWERS TO CLERKSHIP QUESTIONS
Reviewer:Malford Tyson Pillow, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This multiauthored emergency medicine review book focuses on quick, concise subject reviews.
Purpose:The stated purpose is to specifically provide medical students with information central to the practice of emergency medicine so that they can perform well on clerkships, shelf exams, and the USMLE Step 2 exam. Secondary aims are to help residents with information derived from the Core Curriculum. The book does very well in providing a concise yet thorough, easy to read and review template for the medical student. However, since it is admittedly written at the medical student level, it does not serve resident very well.
Audience:The book is written for medical students, with pertinent information for resident physicians. However, the information is not in-depth enough to be helpful to residents.
Features:The review book attempts to cover all of the major topics related to the practice of emergency medicine. The format is similar to that of other books in the First Aid series in that it focuses on the most pertinent information to understanding, diagnosing, and treating various disease processes. The format is augmented by clinical pearls and summary paragraphs of key points that appear on the page margins. The book could be improved by including references for further learning where applicable. Also, the book does not have a question section to test students' knowledge.
Assessment:This review book aims to provide medical students with a concise tool to help them do well on clerkships and various trainingexams. It also tries to provide a useful review for residents in training. It does very well in providing medical students a great review tool. For students interested in emergency medicine as a career, a supplement to this book may be necessary for more in-depth learning and review. It does not provide enough information to make it useful to resident physicians.
