    Synopsis

Leading executive coach and business consultant Susan Scott says, Our work, our relationships, and our lives succeed or fail one conversation at a time. In Fierce Conversation she gives listeners the principles and tools to engage colleagues, customers, friends, and family to provoke learning, tackle tough challenges, and enrich relationships. They will master the courage and skills and—more importantly—enjoy the benefits of fierce conversations in every aspect of their lives. Fierce Conversations is destined to become a new business/personal development classic.

    Publishers Weekly

An offshoot of Scott's international consulting firm, Fierce Conversations Inc., this book lasts as long as a Monday morning shuttle. Yet its thesis, that relationships both professional and personal hinge on how conversations go, and that the best conversations require determinedly gentle honesty and a willingness to listen, lingers long enough to make an impact. "It takes a certain fearlessness to make your private thoughts public. But if what you're thinking makes you squirm and wish to wriggle away, you are probably onto something," she says. On the book's Web site, a streaming-video talk feels fake and rehearsed. But Scott's written words contain substance and, as an author, she's levelheaded and funny. She quotes a wide variety of writers, from Ernest Hemingway to Maya Angelou to Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and clearly explains her key concepts, including "obey your instincts" and "let silence do the heavy lifting." Careerist marketing ploy it may be, but this cleanly written, if cliche-laden, book boasts enough psychological sensitivity to merit success. Those whose conversations with co-workers or family members aren't producing the results they want will find plenty of helpful tools and assignments in this succinct guide. Agent, Margret McBride. (On sale Sept. 16) Forecast: A 12-city author tour and a CBS/Bloomberg Network radio feature will engage readers in conversation about this book. It has the potential to break out of the business genre into general self-help. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

January 28, 2009: Being "fierce" is not about being mean, but about being bold, about confronting reality in a way which is always, always, always respectful of the others involved. Not easy to do, but the tools provided help quite a bit in figuring out how to interact with others courageously and genuinely, in a variety of situations.

The intended target of the book is leaders at various levels in the business world. The effective target is much more broad: teachers, school administrators, churches, other nonprofits, mentors, parents.

March 14, 2007: Susan Scott has done a great job of stringing together a long set of 'pearls of wisdom'. After more than 20 years in HR, most of the people she quotes are familiar and their work has served me well. However, the way Susan Scott brings it together is more powerful than any of the individual work by itself. The challenge to think and act in new ways is stated in a practical manner with inspiring examples of real results--emphasis on practical. Anyone in a position of influence, or who wants to be in one, should hear this work. Susan Scott has a compelling speaking voice and her belief in what she is saying is clear. You may find it helpful to purchase the paperback to make some of the models easier to understand and memorize.
