    Synopsis

Part one of The Lord of the Rings, now featuring film art on the cover.
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in THE HOBBIT. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

Books of the Century; The New York Times Book Review - W.H. Auden

For anyone who likes the genre to which it belongs, the Heroic Quest, I cannot imagine a more wonderful Christmas present....No fiction I have read in the last five years has given me more joy than The Fellowship of the Ring.

    Biography

It seems an unlikely formula for success: an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon, and a book that begins with a little man who lives in a hole in the ground. But The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, created the modern genre of heroic fantasy and made J.R.R. Tolkien one of the most widely-read authors in the world.

November 17, 2009: My Brother was the one who really got me into Lord of The Rings. At first when i read the first two pages i thought that this would be the hardest book to understand, because of the vivid detail. I was wrong lord of the Rings was an amazing book and MOVIE. Lord of the Rings the fellowship of the ring is a book about a dark Lord named Sarun, who created this "one ring to rule them all". Out of the 9 Kings, Sarun's ring contained the most power, but he was destroyed when isildor Human sliced his finger off killing its master. The Orcs, Goblins, and Dark Wizards work together to retrieve the one ring and recreate there long lost master Sarun. In this journey a hobbit named Frodo comes upon the ring and bring it to Rivendell. in Rivendell a wizard, two humans, an elf, a dwarf, and 4 hobbits come together to make the Fellowship of the ring. There job was to destroy the one ring in the fires of Mount Doom. This is the first series of Lord Of the Rings, and it was outstanding. But as soon as i finished the book i had to compare it to the movie because i like to see whats different between the two. I think if anyone likes an adventurous thrilling book, but doesn't mind the 600 pages, should deffinatley read it.

September 16, 2009: I thought that the book was great. You would be able to understand it if you are older than 6th grade. In the story Frodo, a hobbit, inherits a very powerful ring. Frodo and 3 other hobbits travel on a journey to Rivendell to find out what to do with the ring. There they decide that they have to destroy the ring once and for all. The fellowship must travel to the depths of Mount Doom and cast the ring into the fire. What I liked best about the book is that the hobbits aren't the fastest or the strongest of the fellowship, but they don't give up on each other. It is overall a great book that you should read.
