Description:This is the second triumph for Drs. Papel and Nachlas, as well as a cadre of dedicated editors and authors; who expound upon the fabulously intricate world of facial plastic surgery. Six sections encompassing 69 chapters of insightful material relevant to the field of cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery add up to a formidable textbook. Essential new sections highlighting the basic science of wound regeneration; laser, endoscopic and microvascular techniques; and a vital chapter on ethics, which enables the reader to better comprehend the medicolegal arena of medicine, solidify the need for this book.
Purpose:Not wishing to rest upon considerable laurels, the authors plunge ahead in their altruistic way to produce a book that will inculcate a new generation of surgeons to the nuances of facial plastic surgery. The second edition was formulated to provide "essential background information" and through diligent endeavors this primer provides much of the core information necessary to "enhance and improve the practice of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery."
Audience:The authors and editors hail from renowned institutions. The majority are otolaryngologists with a smattering of closely allied specialists who together represent a formidable knowledge bank. Reaching out to complementary experts of a similar mind but dissimilar specialty would enhance the scope, breadth, and reach of this work. Like its predecessor, this updated and expanded version imparts essential core information, targeting residents, fellows and those engaged in thepractice of facial plastic surgery.
Features:Applying the aphorism that the pursuit of knowledge is a worthwhile endeavor is enough rationale to explore this book. By blending basic sciences with clinical studies, it affords the reader a worthwhile experience whether it be wound healing, cosmetic surgery of the face, congenital deformities, or reconstructive endeavors to rebuild a face traumatized by a malignancy or accident. There are a host of illustrations and black-and-white photographs, which embellish the written word but fall shy of the intended purpose of creating a visual, multidimensional description. Adding color would enhance the visuals, enabling an accurate depiction of anatomy and postoperative results. Although references are extensive, they lack contemporary citations that track changing trends in materials, techniques, and our understanding of the human structure. Outstanding features of this book are the organization, indexing, and manner in which chapters unfold giving the reader an overview, dissertation of pertinent basic science, and format for application of clinical knowledge.
Assessment:The editors have succeeded in their Herculean task of orchestrating and artfully distilling a panoply of academic voices into that of a well-rehearsed chorus. In doing so, they have fashioned a cogent and well thought out book. Ten years in the making, this replacement of the first edition has been expanded and updated with relevant subject matter. However, it has retained the intended purpose of being the scaffolding onto which one builds knowledge and eventually the expertise to be a competent facial plastic surgeon.
