Children's Literature

Using the now-familiar “Eyewitness” approach, this book gives readers a smattering of reasonably-detailed information on the world’s most populous country. The focus is primarily on modern China, although the first few sections deal with the land, its history, and its language. Daily life in cities and small villages, family life, religion, education, science, culture, industry, and more are each covered in two-page spreads. Each section features a paragraph overview accompanied by numerous photos with detailed captions. Unfortunately the small font of the captions may deter casual browsers from reading them. This text is supplemented by a timeline, blurbs about famous people, a glossary, and a brief index. A CD of clip art of the book’s photographs and a wall poster are included. Since the next Olympics will be held in China, interest in the country will be high. This book is a good introduction to the country, objectively presenting its strengths and weaknesses. A library edition, without the CD, is also available. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
