In our hectic times, the search for love is often reduced to a joyless exercise, a desperate manhunt, or a cold and insensitive game. As many of us have learned the hard way, these callous approaches can leave us in a rut of negative beliefs, unfulfilled needs, and blame. In trying to be someone we think will be "attractive," we lose sight of who we truly are and how to find the healthy and sustaining relationship that awaits us.
Meditation coach Kathy Freston has been through that vicious cycle herself - and finally broke free. In this insightful and inspiring book she illuminates the path to greater self-awareness - and the real love we all crave. Rooted in Eastern philosophy, A Course in Miracles, and down-to-earth spirituality, Expect a Miracle is a new kind of guide to the search for a great relationship - one that puts the focus back where it belongs: on our own transformation.
After repeatedly lookin' for love in all the wrong places, personal development guru Freston realized that she needed to change herself, not her prospective mate, to find happiness. Along the way, she compiled her mishmash of methods and tools into this loose compendium. Though the good bits are pretty good, it's basically just a 12-step approach fused with New Agey mumbo jumbo. Well-phrased observations ("Miracles are not always earth-shattering, but can, in their quiet and chancelike way, change our lives profoundly") are frequently counteracted by nonsense: "It is the law of spiritual evolution for love to expand itself." There are examples and anecdotes amid the how-to, but somehow this puzzler holds more promise than it delivers. Like Debra Mandel's Healing the Sensitive Heart: How To Stop Getting Hurt, Build Your Inner Strength, and Find the Love You Desire, this is for large public libraries and special collections dealing exclusively with self-help. July 22, 2006: If you are looking for a relationship or already in a relationship this is a must read book. I decided to get this book after I read the one by the same author and enjoyed it highly. This book is about emotional issues and sometimes mindful issues that either keep you from finding the right relatipnship or keep you feeling unfulfilled. This is an emotional and spiritual journey to love and in love. This is a highly recommended book to all. I've also just begun to read lies at the alter by Dr. Robin Smith.
