September 11, 2009: Although Organic Chemistry is not as strongly emphasized on the MCAT as it once was. A strong O Chem knowledge is still extremely crucial to receiving high score on the test.
This book is very comprehensive and corresponds to the MCAT Examcracker's review book.They are individual questions generally and occasionally include a situation (reaction synthesis) and a series of questions.The questions are analytically based and also content review questions.If you have a weak Organic Chem background you should consider buying this book or checking it out from a library. The questions help reinforce the content review of Organic Chemistry and the explanations are extremely helpful in learning how to approach organic chemistry questions.This is a book that you should get well in advance of your test date. Since MCAT Organic Questions usually are passaged based and occasionally some non passage based questions. This book shouldn't be used as the end all preparation. You still should take mock passages and mock tests to prepare.However as your reviewing content these questions help reinforce what you've learned. Sometimes when you review content you tell yourself yeah I know this. When you try and answer some of these 1001 questions you might realize that you don't know esterification or R and S as well as you'd like.Even though it's an old book the content is still extremely relevant and the questions are analytical in nature so that as you approach these questions it will build the skills necessary for you to approach the MCAT questions.In general when you approach a MCAT question you must be able to knock off the obviously wrong answers. This book can be used to practice this skill. Obviously this isn't the end all of review for the MCAT. You should also not use this book to cram for the test in one month. Of course if you've only spent a month or so preparing for this test unless you have an incredible mind don't expect a good score.The MCAT is a critical reasoning test. These questions require critical thinking instead of just normal memorizing questions.
