    Synopsis

PORTABLE PROFESSORTM is a series of exciting and informative lectures recorded by some of today's most renowned university and college professors. Each course introduces listeners to fascinating, and sometimes startling, insights into the intellectual forces that shape our understanding of the world. Each package includes 14 riveting lectures presented by notable professors as well as a book-length course guide.

The study of the past is supposed to help us make sense of our place in history and inform the choices we make every day. But what if the lessons we were taught in American History class were not true? In this eye-opening and provocative series of lectures, renowned historian James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, unravels the fact from the fiction, the unvarnished truths from the convenient myths, and explains the reasons American history has so often been distorted.

April 25, 2007: I listened to this course as my daughter covered this material in her school history class. While her history texts are more honest than what I had when I went to school, there are still omissions or myths and it was fun to go through these with her. As Loewen says, we need not face the past with shame or guilt, just honesty. History, then, is more exciting and interesting. It certainly is more interesting for my daughter. For example, she has a better understanding of Columbus and what his voyages meant to the Native Americans and the slave trade. If you want a stimulating American history course that will challenge your beliefs about the Civil War, the US presidency and Constitution, the 'discovery' of the 'New World', etc, then this is a fine course to take. Loewen also has written an excellent text ''Lies My Teacher Told Me'' that offers a deeper examination of the topics covered in the course. The accompanying course guide is very good and has excellent reference.

January 13, 2007: It is with no hyperbole intended that I state that this course is one of the most instructive and enlightening I have experienced in my 20 years of formal education. I believe, therefore, that it is incumbent upon anyone who possesses an earnest desire to know the truth about our nation's history to secure a copy of this course.
