In addition, it has a variety of learning features to ensure student retention, such as, Healthy People 2010 boxes, Threaded Case Studies and Comparison Charts highlighting common diseases. Plus, itincludes a BONUS CD-ROM and companion website that provides numerous resources for both students and instructors, including video clips of each developmental stage and care of the hospitalized child!

"Doody's Core Titles™ 2009."

Annotation

This primary "essentials textbook" is intended specifically as the course text for the standard, increasingly shortened Pediatrics course in Associate Degree programs. The book covers those topics of importance that are addressed in ADN programs without providing the unnecessary detail that is seen in virtually all essentials pediatrics texts on the market today. A companion text by Susan Scott-Ricci--Essential Textbook of Women's Care, Newborn Care, and Women's Health Nursing--can serve as the text for the Maternity course in ADN programs.

Reviewer:Nicole M. Roehrig, BSN (University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center)
Description:This pediatric nursing textbook provides a wide variety of basic knowledge and skills necessary for different pediatric healthcare settings, diseases, disorders, and nursing practices. The book is organized and comprehensive, and offers appropriate and applicable illustrations to strengthen concept absorption.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide readers with basic nursing knowledge and information on children and their healthcare issues. The learning objectives that are clearly posted at the beginning of each chapter are explained throughout the book. The book addresses the objectives in each unit and connects the concepts throughout the chapters.
Audience:Novice students and nurses are the targeted audience, but the book offers a wide variety of information that can be useful to any practitioners in pediatric settings. For example, those who practice or are interested in the outpatient setting can easily find supportive data on those issues that are more focused on inpatient settings. The editor has extensive pediatric experience and has gathered many colleagues to contribute.
Features:From the well child to the dying child, from outpatient to inpatient, the fundamentals are addressed. The book covers important key issues in today's nursing practice such as evidence-based practice and family centered care. Both concepts are being implemented in practices all over the world, and it is important nursing students are exposed to them early in a basic nursing textbook. The book includes colorful and helpful illustrations andappendixes such as the growth charts, ECG strips, and the Denver II development assessment. Helpful visuals supporting the text are integrated throughout. Many students are visual learners and illustrations help to connect the written material to actual situations. One helpful feature that is missing is a glossary.
Assessment:This textbook provides readers with information and concepts applicable in different pediatric healthcare settings. Basic definitions are provided along with the nurse's role in the specific care of children and their families. Different learning/teaching strategies, incorporating illustrations, case studies, quizzes, and critical thinking exercises engage readers.
