Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN (Slippery Rock University )
Description:This is the sixth edition of a book that introduces the consumer of nursing research to the research process and the skills needed to critically appraise research reports and apply the results to practice.
Purpose:The purpose is to assist consumers of nursing research in evaluating the adequacy of research findings in terms of merit and potential for utilization. This is an important purpose since it is a growing expectation that nurses will base practice on sound research evidence.
Audience:The target audience is undergraduate nursing students. The authors have a long history of publishing nursing research books.
Features:The book is divided into the usual steps of the research process. New to this edition is the enhanced assistance on critiquing studies, more emphasis on evidence-based practice implications, and increased coverage of qualitative research. The previous features to assist consumers of research have been retained. There are many features for student learning: chapter objectives, key terms, chapter summary points, suggested readings, full-length research examples, and critical thinking activities. A student study guide and CD-ROM accompany the book.
Assessment:This book will be of great use to the consumer of research and undergraduate nursing students. It is very user friendly. The updates to this edition justify its replacement.
