The previous edition of this work was included in Brandon/Hill. In this introduction to nuclear imaging techniques, the 14 chapters presented by Mettler (radiology and nuclear medicine, U. of New Mexico School of Medicine) and Guiberteau (clinical radiology and nuclear medicine, U. of Texas Medical School at Houston) cover physics, instrumentation, imaging of the major organic systems, quality control, and legal requirements. For this new edition, they have updated the chapters to include newer aspects of instrumentation and radiopharmaceuticals and have removed outdated material. They have also added a chapter on positron emission tomography and now include color images because of this addition. Also added to the text are a little over 60 pages of unknown case set images designed to test the reader's overall knowledge in nuclear imaging. This is the fourth edition of what has become a modern classic textbook of general nuclear medicine. According to the authors, the goal of this latest edition is to incorporate newer developments in the areas of instrumentation and radiopharmaceuticals while removing outdated material and maintaining affordability of the text. Radiology residents and nuclear medicine fellows comprise the intended audience for this introductory text. However, practicing nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists will likely find that thorough treatment of essential topics and fluid style are reasons to include this text in their libraries. The format of the current edition remains essentially true to its predecessors, the most recent of which was published in 1991. Newly added are helpful pearls and pitfalls sections at the end of most chapters and a chapter devoted to elements of image interpretation. The authors have also replaced many of the older images and greatly increased their numbers, resulting in a more complete treatment of the material. This book represents improvement in a text which was already considered to be among the best of its genre. Upgrades and additions, coupled with its low cost, should easily justify its purchase to newcomers to the field and to those familiar with its format from previous editions. It will undoubtedly remain a fundamental tool in the education of radiology and nuclear medicine residents for years to come.
