    Synopsis

Test takers preparing to take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) must command a high-level vocabulary to achieve a high score. This book is designed to teach the definitions of 800 words often appearing on the GRE while also familiarizing test takers with how the words are generally used in context. The book opens with a pretest that serves as a diagnostic, then presents the word list with extensive sentence-completion exercises. A following chapter discusses and analyzes essential word roots. The book concludes with a detailed post-test. Answers are given for all exercises and for all questions in the post-test.

July 04, 2009: This book is very helpful for any one who wants to prepare for the GRE test, gain some kind of confidence, and more vocabulary. However, those 800 words were not existed in the test that I have taken last few days. I can say only 4 out 800 words were existed in the test. I thought if I memorized all these words, especially the 300 high frequency words, I'll do great in the test, unfortunately I didn't.Anyway, it is a good book for a beginner.

May 30, 2008: I have been conducting SAT and GRE workshops for over 5 years. I recently began using this book in my classes. I like Essential Words for the GRE because it doesn?t use unrealistically simple sentences to teach the words, like a lot of vocabulary books do. This means students get practice in reading academic subject matter similar to what they?ll find in the actual GRE. I?ve used many prep books from many publishers and they all contain quite a few errors in their exercises. I have found a few in this book, but considering the thousands of exercises it is pretty error-free.
