Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description:This is the newest complement to Dr. Stahl's books on psychopharmacology covering drugs used for psychosis and mood stabilization. This guide provides clinicians with an easy to read reference integrating clinical practice with theoretical psychopharmacology.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive compendium of drugs used in psychosis and mood stabilization in an easy to read and colorful reference.
Audience:It is targeted at anyone dealing with psychotropics such as students, residents, clinicians, nursing staff, and psychopharmacologists.
Features:This reference alphabetically lists 20 approved psychotropics used for the treatment of psychosis and mood stabilization. Unlike other guides, this reader-friendly book uses colors, clear demarcations of sections, and icons for easy identification. Each drug has five sections identified by unique colors discussing therapeutics, side effects, dosing and use, special populations, and a section on the "art of psychopharmacology." Within each section are titles that quickly assist readers in finding pertinent information. The drugs are covered in a consistent format and include brand names, FDA approved indications, augmenting strategies, side effect mitigation, and dosing guidelines. Of particular note is the section on special populations, including the elderly, children and adolescents, and pregnant women. A very nice feature setting this guide apart from the multitude of references in the market is the author's opinion and expertise combined with practical advice in the art ofpsychopharmacology section. The indexes are particularly useful sorting by brand name, use, and class.
Assessment:This is a very useful and easy to read update that clinicians can use in daily practice as a quick reference. While the book is not as extensive as the PDR, it does provide a colorful and user friendly reference that presents the necessary information. For those who deal with patients with only psychotic and bipolar disorders and who do not need the complete Prescriber's Guide, this abridged version will suffice.
