From the Publisher
Essential Cell Biology, Second Edition contains basic, core knowledge about how cells work. It has a proven track record in providing students with a conceptual and accessible grounding in cell biology. The text and figures have been prepared to be easy-to-follow, accurate, clear and engaging for the introductory student. Each section follows logically from the previous one, telling a story, rather than being a collection of facts. Questions integrated throughout each chapter encourage the reader to pause, think about what they have read, and attempt to apply the new knowledge in ways that test their understanding. Based on user feedback, the Second Edition now offers increased coverage of genetics and more experimental background. It is completely up-to-date.

An excellent example of designing a textbook for undergraduates and non-biology majors. It is clear, well illustrated, conversational in tone and enjoyable to read and browse through.

Description:This is the second edition of a cell biology textbook. The previous edition was published in 1998.
Purpose:The purpose, as stated in the preface, is to provide a textbook of cell biology that is easy to understand for the beginning student. Since most other textbooks of cell biology are geared to the advanced student, this book, with its clear and easy to understand illustrations, fulfills that niche.
Audience:This book is written for the undergraduate student of cell biology. However, because of its clear and easy to understand language and its ample figures to illustrate difficult concepts, this book is also appropriate for the advanced high school student. I am considering using this book as a textbook for a high school science summer camp. The authors are highly credible authorities in the field of cell biology.
Features:This introduction to the broad subject of cell biology offers an explanation of the essential theories necessary for the understanding of basic biochemistry and molecular biology. This is not a textbook of molecular biology or biochemistry, though it offers the necessary overview to allow the understanding of the fundamental concepts of cell biology. The superior illustrations allow students to rapidly understand complex ideas. In addition, the questions and answers provided at the end of each chapter allow the students to test their knowledge.
Assessment:This well written book is targeted to the undergraduate student who is interested in learning the basics of cell biology. It does not replace a more advancedtextbook such as The Molecular Biology of the Cell, 4th edition, by Alberts et al. (Taylor & Francis, 2002) or Molecular Cell Biology, 4th edition, by Lodish, et al. (W. H. Freeman, 2000), but it is a better choice as a textbook for the beginning student at the undergraduate level. The second edition was brought up-to-date with the latest information about genomes and the molecular basis of genetics.
