Description: This resourceful handbook of anatomical and surgical pathology and cytopathology of endocrine organs is a volume in the well-received series, Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology.
Purpose: In the words of the author, this book should allow us, through a highly formatted template, to acquire the requisite knowledge of diseases of all major endocrine organs. Pathologists have to be able to fuse the clinical, radiographic, laboratory, macroscopic, microscopic, histochemical, ultrastructural, and molecular results into a coherent and reasonable whole and this book should give them all the information necessary to achieve this goal.
Audience: A stated goal of this handbook to provide the essential information that any pathologist, either general or subspecialized, in training or in practice, would find useful in the evaluation of the endocrine specimens encountered in diagnostic practice. Dr. Lester Thompson, a renowned medical writer and expert in the field of head and neck and endocrine pathology, has gathered a small group of contributors, who are also outstanding pathologists, including Drs. Carol Adair, Jacqueline Wieneke, Roland de Krijger, Paul Komminoth, Clara Heffes, Leslie Sobin, and Jennifer Hunt.
Features: This handbook gives us an overview of selected disorders of the endocrine organs (thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, pituitary gland, adrenal glands and paraganglia) which allows quick referencing and comparison from one chapter to another. It is organized into 13 chapters and three appendixes, including a review of the TNM classification and consensus synoptic reporting of endocrine tumors. Separate chapters cover non-neoplastic, benign, and malignant neoplasms of the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, pituitary gland, adrenal glands and paraganglia system. The comprehensive appendixes include a review of the anatomy, embryology, and histology of the endocrine system, as well as a discussion pertaining to intraoperative consultations and grossing techniques. The use of illustrations, charts, radiologic images, gross and microscopic as well as cytologic color figures is excellent. Among the most notable feature of this book (like all the others in this series) are the summary charts of clinical features and pathological features for each topic that allow a quick overview of the pathologic entity under discussion and its clinical aspects.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for pathologists, offering an up-to-date comprehensive review of clinical and pathological features of endocrine diseases. Ancillary studies like immunohistochemistry, molecular findings, FNP cytology are covered in adequate detail and contribute to a better understanding of the basic pathology. The prognosis and therapy of neoplastic lesions are also outlined. I liked the systematic, organized, logical, and easily readable presentation and I recommend it enthusiastically.
