Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Cindy L Davis, DNSc (Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System)
Description:This book describes common emergency room procedures with vivid illustrations, up-to-date references, and articulate descriptions for a concise, well organized reference for both novice and experienced nurses.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a resource for nurses who may encounter different emergency procedures in their practice. The editor acknowledges that it is difficult for even experienced nurses to keep current on procedures that are infrequently performed in their practice settings and she aims to provide clear, pertinent information about them. Although this is one of many emergency nursing procedure books on the market, it is the fourth edition of a standard text that continues to serve as a handy, quick reference in a uniform and concise way that makes it a worthy acquisition for a nursing library. The book fully meets the objectives by providing clear, well executed descriptions and guidance for nurses performing or assisting in various nursing procedures.
Audience:The audience for this book is varied. For experienced nurses, it is a handy review of infrequently done procedures or an update on current information about more commonly performed procedures. For novices, it is a valuable reference to aid in their growth and development as skilled nurses. Advanced practice nurses, residents, and students would benefit from this reference as well. The writing is such that it is not condescending to those with more experience while remaining understandable for novices. The editor has gathered a formidable group of expert authors andspecialists in each area lending credibility to the book.
Features:The procedures are organized in a logical progression starting with airway, breathing, and circulation and progressing to system/organ specific sections. The book's strong points include the organization of the topics, relevance of the references, vivid illustrations, and readability of the text. The illustrations are numerous and well done. The section on medication administration is particularly helpful. The only shortcoming is the size and weight of the manual. A small reference card/pocket-sized book summarizing some of the more common procedures would be helpful.
Assessment:In order for nursing staff to remain current in the frequently changing world of medicine, they must have access to updated texts that incorporate those changes. This fourth edition of an established standard, through current references and evidence-based practices, remains relevant. This is a high quality book that continues to provide important information for all levels of nursing staff.
