Annotation

The leading textbook in emergency medicine now has expanded coverage with 308 chapters, new contributors and new editors. As an American College of Emergency Physicians/McGraw-Hill publication, the Study Guide is the defining source for clinical EM management and for those preparing for board or recertification exams. New, two-color figures have been added and there are additional tables and algorithms. A compact atlas is now included and delivers stunning EM pictures in full color. Many of the sections have been completely revised including Toxicology (Herbals and Vitamins) and Pediatrics (Respiratory Distress) as well as brand new sections such as Nontraumatic Musculoskeletal Disorders and Special Patients. Emergency Medicine is changing, but the Study Guide remains the authoritative diagnosis and management tool for all emergency conditions.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Reginald C. Nesbitt, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This book is a compilation of topics commonly seen in a busy emergency department.
Purpose:The purpose of this edition follows that of past editions, to provide a book to reflect the practice of emergency medicine. In additional to fundamental concepts, advances in the specialty are delineated and integrated into the book.
Audience:While the intended audience are residents and practitioners of emergency medicine, the book is just as accessible to students and other healthcare providers. The multiauthor format ensures sufficient perspective in the individual chapters from authorities in the field.
Features:The book addresses the many broad themes seen in emergency medicine from critical care, medicine and its subspecialties, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology as well as significant primary care issues. Significant updates in the literature are illustrated in the chapters. Important clinical points are bolded which is new to this edition.
Assessment:This publication represents a significant improvement over the prior edition. It provides an evidence-based approach in a easily digestible and user friendly format. This edition compares favorably to the two major references in the field of emergency medicine.

Biography

The editors are eager to proceed with this new venture and will receive enthusiastic support from the emergency medicine community. Judy Tintinalli will continue as editor-in-chief and will devote a significant amount of time to setting up the editorial system, helping us define features, and securing sources for multimedia content. In addition our plan is to develop a separate online editorial advisory board with some representation from residents and younger Internet savvy MD’s. ACEP’s role in the project has not yet been established but will be defined after presentation of this proposal to Editorial Board. The editors for this project will be the same as the book although we will consider the addition of others in our forthcoming planning meeting.
