Description:This pocket sized manual is the companion handbook to Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide, 6th edition, by Tintinalli et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2004). The previous edition was released in 2000.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a portable, pocket-sized reference on the clinical features, differential diagnosis, care and disposition of patients presenting to the emergency department. These important objectives are met and exceeded in this excellent book.
Audience:The intended audience is healthcare workers who are engaged in the practice of clinical emergency medicine. The primary audience are resident and attending physicians, but RNs, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are also targeted. The authors are a very credible group of practicing, mostly academic emergency medicine attending physicians.
Features:The book includes a comprehensive, succinct review of the medical and traumatic conditions that patients present with at the emergency department. The book contains a remarkable amount of information is a relatively small size and focuses on the key facts and not on the pathophysiology or esoteric information. The book is primarily text with a limited number of colored plates and diagrams. Although meant as a pocket-sized reference, you would need a large pocket and strong shoulder to carry the book on a regular basis.
Assessment:This book is outstanding. It is packed with information and amazingly comprehensive for its size. It uses a "just the facts" approach.If one is looking for a condensed version of an emergency medicine textbook, this is the book. It is the best in its class. This latest edition includes helpful color plates of dermatologic conditions and contemporary information on bioterrorism, SARS, West Nile virus and toxicology.
