Synopsis

BRS Embryology, Fourth Edition is a succinct outline-format review for USMLE and course exams, with USMLE-style questions at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive USMLE-style examination at the end of the book. The book also includes radiographs, sonograms, computed tomography scans, and photographs of various congenital malformations.

This updated edition has a new organization: prefertilization through the embryonic period; system by system; genetic abnormalities; and teratology. The chapter on structural chromosomal abnormalities has been substantially revised. This edition's review questions are in the clinical vignette-based format of the current USMLE.

A companion Website offers the fully searchable online text and an interactive question bank.

Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Michael F. Dauzvardis

This is a second edition work designed for use as a USMLE review text. It is written in outline form with interspersed line drawings and review questions. The purpose is to provide a tool for reviewing general embryology or specifically for preparing for the medical boards, Part One. These objectives are met by coupling a simple but informative outline narrative with accurate line drawings. The editors, both professors of anatomy, gear this book toward first year medical students to assist them in performing well on the embryology portion of their boards exam. It would certainly serve college students in the health related sciences equally well. The intricacies of human development from gametogenesis to birth are covered. All regions of development are well covered with special emphasis on congenital malformations and clinically relevant material. Review exams at the end of each chapter are extremely useful, especially the long, comprehensive exam at the end of the book. An anatomy course would probably serve as a prerequisite to using the book as a stand alone text although the chapter format would easily translate into lecture outlines. This second edition is surely justified as new discoveries in embryology are always being made. The cardiovascular and nervous system chapters are expanded. A chapter on limb development is added and the section on the musculoskeletal system is rewritten. This book will drastically reduce the time a student needs to prepare for the embryology section of the USMLE.
