July 24, 2008: I used to catch readings by Aberjhani in downtown Savannah years ago and I hear he doesn't do that anymore so this book is like really great for that reason and because I've never seen anything else like it either. I think the first time I heard about it was at one of those open mics and I remember reading about it but I just figured it was going to be a nice little book with a few pictures by Luther Vann. It is a big amazing book with seriously awesome art right next to words by one of my favorite contemporary poets. I didn't think anything could match Aberjhani's open mic slams but Elemental does. This is what poetry and art are supposed to be all about, taking you inside the soul and showing you how amazing it is.

July 05, 2008: I discovered Luther E. Vann's work when I went to the Jepson Center in Savannah to see an exhibit of photographs of Frida Kahlo, one of my favorite artists of all time. Just so happened that Vann had a show right next to the Kahlo photos and I ended up spending more time studying his amazing multi-perspective works than I did the photographs. Oddly enough, I didn't find out about the book until later and had to go back to the gift shop to pick up a copy. Flipping through the pages of Elemental, I had to multiply what I saw in the gallery by about 50. As phenomenal as this artist is, I couldn't believe I hadn't known anything about this work until now. Fortunately, the book not only has some pretty intense poetry to go along with the images but gives a lot of background on the artist. Discovering this artist and this book is one of the highlights of my summer.
