Synopsis

Adding chapters on neonatal and pediatric respiratory disorders and noninvasive positive pressure ventilation, Wilkins (cardiopulmonary sciences, Loma Linda U.), Stoller (pulmonary and critical care medicine, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation), and Scanlan (health sciences, U. of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) present the new edition of their basic respiratory care textbook. They have also reorganized the material into seven sections covering foundations, applied anatomy and physiology, assessment of respiratory disorders, a synopsis of cardiopulmonary disease, basic therapeutics, acute and critical care, and preventative and long-term care. Activities include: Vocabulary review - matching, fill-in-the-blank exercises, and crossword puzzles. Reviews of chapter objectives check understanding of primary concepts. Chapter highlights review key points from each chapter of EGAN'S FUNDAMENTALS OF RESPIRATORY CARE. Case studies apply the knowledge gained to real-life scenarios. Review questions and NBRC discussion allow practice with questions styled after those on the NBRC exams and learn what to expect on the board exams. Food for thought - critical thinking questions move beyond recall and apply concepts to the world

Description:In its 40th year, the revised ninth edition of this book is considered by many to be the authoritative text in the field of respiratory care. Last updated in 2003, this edition continues the tradition of defining the profession of respiratory care by providing the requisite information for students and serving as a valued resource for practitioners.
Purpose:This book provides the education foundation for respiratory therapy students in training, yet serves as a treasured reference for practitioners.
Audience:It is uniquely written for both respiratory care students and practitioners. The authors, unquestionably, are experts in their fields of expertise.
Features:This edition contains an unprecedented 51 chapters in seven sections. Each chapter begins with objectives, an outline, and key terms and ends with references. Four-color images, tables, "Rule of Thumb" notations, "Mini Clini" case studies, and key points reinforce learning concepts throughout the book. Four appendixes covering temperature corrections, STPD to BTPS and STPS to STPD conversions, normal values for vitals, blood gas parameters, hematology, blood chemistry, hemodynamics, and pulmonary function are supplemented by additional information (common medical abbreviations, equations, etc.) on the inside covers. The book ends with an excellent glossary and index.
Assessment:More than just a textbook for students, this ninth edition defines the standards of practice in respiratory care and serves as an invaluable resource, particularly forhospital-based practitioners. Given the continuous advances in medicine and their impact on respiratory care, it is hoped the authors will continue to revise this book to educate and reinforce practice standards.

An absolute miracle.by lilly85

December 15, 2008: As a CRT, I recently returned to school to become a registered RT. I remember suffering with Wyka during my years of becoming a CRT. Anyone who has come across the Wyka book would certainly know how dreadful it was and which eventually led me to look for other sources in respiratory. Now that I am a returning student for advancement the school provided me with Egan's fundamentals of respiratory care and I can't believe how much of an improvement it is from Wyka. Egan's makes it easier for the reader to understand the concepts and content and has clearer and better explanations of the respiratory material. Illustrations are very helpful and they're colored which is a plus instead of perusing through a black and white, blurry picture. I am just amazed and in awe at how much of a difference it is from what I use to contend with. Anyone going into the respiratory care field should definitely own this book!
