    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Bijesh P. Maroo, BS, MS, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:These two double-sided laminated cards are an easy to access reference regarding echocardiography. The durable cards easily fit in a coat pocket for convenient storage.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a portable reference regarding valvular disease, reference values, commonly used formulas, 2D/M-Mode data, grading of diastolic function, and echocardiographic anatomy.
Audience:These are intended primarily for cardiology fellows, echocardiography sonographers, cardiology practitioners, and other healthcare professionals who use echocardiography.
Features: Although brief, these cards contain a tremendous amount of material. Values for classification of aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonic stenosis are organized into tables. Similarly, values for classification of aortic, tricuspid, and mitral regurgitation are presented. A table contains morphology scoring of mitral stenosis, and a diagram shows mitral valve anatomy. Doppler data regarding both prosthetic aortic and mitral valves are included (commonly used prostheses are all present) . Reference values for 2D echo and M-Mode measurements are included. In addition, commonly used formulas (e.g., AVA continuity equation, PISA, MVA) are listed. Normal valve areas, and velocities for aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves are described; there is also a TEE atheroma grading table. A particularly useful section on echocardiographic findings in cardiac tamponade is included — comparison between constrictive pericarditis and restrictive cardiomyopathy is well illustrated. There is a lengthydescription of differential diagnoses for a variety of echocardiographic findings. A well illustrated section of diastolic dysfunction includes figures depicting mitral valve flow velocities, pulmonary vein velocities, MV annulus velocities, and the grading/classification of diastolic dysfunction. Reference values of normal diastolic indices are included. A table estimates right atrial pressures. Finally, the set includes a well drawn figure to illustrate the 17-segment model of wall motion, and coronary artery distributions.
Assessment:All of the tables in this set are easy to read and well organized. In general, the reference values correspond to values set by either the American College of Cardiology or the American Society of Echocardiography. The portable nature of the cards makes their use feasible at the bedside (while performing an echo) , or while in the reading room.
