    Synopsis

In the tradition of his contemporary classic Parliament of Whores, the man who The Wall Street Journal calls "the funniest writer in America" is back with Eat the Rich, in which he takes on the global economy. P. J. O'Rourke leads you on an hysterical whirlwind world tour from the "good capitalism" of Wall Street to the "bad socialism" of Cuba in search of the answer to an age-old question: "Why do some places prosper and thrive, while others just suck?" With stops in Albania, Sweden, Hong Kong, Moscow, and Tanzania, P.J. brings along his incomparable wit and finds hilarity wherever he goes.

New York Times Book Review - Peter Passell

Eat the Rich is a delightful collection of anecdotes and one-liners. Those who insist on leavening their entertainment with redeeming social significance can always watch public television.

    Somewhat-Dated Economics Observationsby Anonymous

December 19, 2007: P J O'Rourke turns his attention to the economy in this collection of previously published pieces 'glued together with a few new bits'. Written in the mid-1990s and published in 1999, the section on the New York Stock Exchange 'or as P J calls it 'Good Capitalism'' is marked by the fervor of the tech stocks and dot-com boom of those days, and the entire section seems now entirely too optimistic. Still, O'Rourke balances it by visiting other countries 'Cuba, Sweden, China, etc.' and comparing and contrasting the various economic systems and implementation of same. There's also a hilarious section where he uses John Grisham and Courtney Love to illustrate an economic theory of specialization. As usual, O'Rourke has done his homework and is able to simply explain complicated concepts, filtered through his unique sense of humor and libertarian sensibilities. Although not quite of the caliber of O'Rourke's finest efforts 'Parliament of Whores, All the Trouble in the World and Holidays in Hell, in that order', Eat the Rich is still well worth reading for O'Rourke fans.
