Charmaine Hunt

This book covers all aspects of drug information practice. Chapters are organized into five parts, including past, present, and future drug information, and sections on providing information, legal and ethical issues, special activities, and drug and poison information centers. This book provides a framework for improving a practitioner's information management skills and helping he or she evolve with the changing healthcare environment. It reviews how to research, interpret, collate, and disseminate medical information. It provides guidance for applying those skills to activities common in institutional and managed care settings, such as quality assurance, pharmacy and therapeutics committee activities, writing, and clinical practice guidelines. These worthy objectives are timely because they address current standards of practice and provide recommendations for meeting future drug information needs. It currently fills a void in this aspect of practice. Although the book is broad in scope, the authors meet their objectives. If more depth is required, the reader may consult the chapter's references. This book is written for pharmacy students, pharmacists, and persons interested in specializing in drug or poison information. Many of the authors are reputable authorities in drug information. This textbook features 32 appendixes that illustrate examples from the text or provide additional information (i.e., drug information request and quality assurance forms; formats for and examples of drug usage evaluations and monographs; and ethics cases). Current and pertinent references and study questions complete each chapter. The text is enhanced with the use of tables, flow charts, lists, illustrations, and summaries. This work is an overview of past, present, and future drug information practice. It provides direction for retrieving, collating, evaluating, and disseminating drug information and has numerous examples on applying those skills. All pharmacists would benefit by reading this practical book. Libraries or bookstores that serve pharmacy students or pharmacists should consider this book.
