      Synopsis

"Of all the people I play against, the only one I truly fear is Larry Bird."—Magic Johnson, from the Foreword.

The heart and soul of a champion: his life, his career, his game. To understand basketball, you have to understand Larry Bird. Arguably the greatest all-around player the game has ever known, he led the Boston Celtics from the basement to three world championships, collecting three NBA Most Valuable Player awards along the way. Yet, despite these massive accomplishments, Bird has rarely talked to the press, and much about the man has remained a mystery. Now in Drive, the long-silent superstar sets the record straight, revealed a side of himself-and of basketball-you've never see before. Inside, you'll learn Bird's most private feelings about: The momentous decision to transfer from Bobby Knight's Indiana University to Indiana State. The heartbreak of his father's suicide and his own failed marriage. The single-minded discipline that tumed a small-town hero into a national superstar. The Boston Garden and the legendary Celtic charm. The Isiah Thomas controversy and the fierce Celtic-Laker rivalry. The great players of the NBA: including Magic Johnson, Dominique Wilkins, and Michael Jordan, and much more. here is the book that puts a basketball legend-and his game-on the line. And scores!

      Publishers Weekly

The Boston Celtic forward addresses his troubled past, discussing his teammates and telling basketball anecdotes in the process. ``Depth and introspection are not among the book's strengths,'' warned PW . ``However, even the brief suggestions of the inner Bird make the book worth reading.'' April 08, 2009: You don't have to be really rich to play basketball; in fact Drive by Larry Bird tells us about how his life wasn't filled with money. He had a big family and not a lot of money at home. The book tells about how his life when he grew up helped his career as a basketball play later on in his life. The book also tells about how he was drafted on many teams before he got drafted to the Celtics, which was his most famous drafting. You also find how his family helped him get so far in his life and how they impacted it. His family pretty much helped him find his college and what one was right for him and his basketball skills. They influenced how he played and the choices he made in life. It helped him because he had to make a lot of big choices in life so with their help it was a lot easier.

In my opinion, Drive was a good book but it was very repetitive at times. I think that if you like basketball, the Celtics, or Larry Bird you should definitely read this book. Even though I don't play basketball I liked this book and thought it was a good read. I like it because it describes his life as a kid and it is good to know what his life was like compared to mine. I would recommend this book to kids in the middle school age group 5-8 grade, if you are in these grade levels then definitely read it, especially if you play basketball. It was a good book!

March 24, 2009: The story line ends the year I was born, and published a year later. I have spent countless hours talking with my father, father's friends, and my grandfather about the Celtics in the 80's. Hearing about the "The Big Three" of their day, and the classic matchup with the L.A. Lakers. I'm fully satisfied with this book and what it has given me. I understand what was going on inside and outside of the locker room in the years where the Boston Celtics ruled the NBA. I can finally sit down and watch the "New Big Three" play and talk with my father about the differences and ask questions about the Celtics in the 80's. It not only has given me the feeling like I was there in the 80's but brought me closer to my family and loved ones.
