    Synopsis

The secret to taking off those hated pounds? "I lost 25 pounds living up to Dr. Shapiro's simple plan for reducing my waistline. What worked for me were the visual aids—a picture can be worth 1,000 calories! They don't call him the Prince of Pounds for nothing!"
—Dennis Duggan, Pulitzer prize-winning columnist, Newsday

Dr. Shapiro proves that great eating and weight loss can go hand in hand if you make the right choices.

Starting the day right, eating out for pleasure or business, enjoying a snack or even a chocolate indulgence—it can all be done without gaining weight, if you follow the "picture perfect" guidelines in this book.

Dr. Shapiro's proven program of Food Awareness Training empowers you to take charge of your eating. You can stop depriving yourself, stop feeling guilty—and stop dieting. Whether you want to lose 100 pounds or want to maintain the healthy weight you have now, here are the images that will instantly change your habits for life.

"Dr. Shapiro brings an important new approach to weight control. This book allows the reader to get the picture of a personal eating plan for healthy living."
—George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., Harvard Medical School

"In 40 years of reading and evaluating writing on obesity and nutrition, this is one of the most clearly written books I have ever read. The photographs are indeed an innovation in understanding the details and personal applications of Dr. Shapiro's approach."
—Maria Day Simonson, Sc.D., Ph.D., director, the Johns Hopkins Health, Weight, and Stress Clinic

"Dr. Shapiro has written the definitive book about making intelligent eating choices. The photos are truly a revelation, and the book's commonsense approach makes it accessible to everyone."
    —Drew Nieporent, restaurateur

"A visual and effective book that is for everybody! It gets a very important message across in a wonderfully simple way!"
—Denise Austin, host of Lifetime TV's Daily Workout

"As a dietitian, I like seeing in pictures what we have been telling people for years. . . . Here is some basic, sound information that everyone can benefit from."
—Franca Alphin, R.D., administrative director, Duke University Diet and Fitness Center

"A startling book that taught me more about nutrition than I had learned in 4 years at medical school, 5 years of postgraduate training, and 30 years of orthopedic practice. This book is a 'must read' for most all physicians as well as their patients."
—Marvin S. Gilbert, M.D., Manhattan Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group

"A very simple but potent tool for helping people make changes without diets or 'resistance' to any food. . . . The approach is a win-win!"
—Susan Olson, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and co-author of Keeping It Off: Winning at Weight Loss

    Publishers Weekly

A New York-based physician specializing in weight control, Shapiro will no doubt startle many lifelong dieters and experts with his approach to eating. There are no "correct" portions and there are no bad foods. Instead, he insists that people must become aware of what they're consuming. To illustrate this principle, the book is filled with color photographs of different foods. For example, one page shows a handful of mixed nuts, potato chips and vegetable crisps: these three portions have 400 calories each, but 10 cups of popcorn has the same number of calories as the rest. A one-cup serving of Quaker Natural Cereal has 540 calories, but that same number of calories is found in 16 low-cal Fudgsicles. Shapiro uses real-life examples of people with weight problems and includes practical advice, albeit in brief chapters, on exercise and the psychological reasons why people become overweight. However, the power of this book is clearly the illustrations showing the "right" and "wrong" food choices. Shapiro walks readers through ethnic menus (Chinese, Greek, etc.), explaining which choices make the most sense healthwise. This is a smart approach to dieting from which everyone, regardless of their weight, will benefit. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

September 14, 2005: I have lost 35 lbs. Shapiro's plan works. In a sense, it is not a diet at all, because you keep the eating habits that you develop forever. It works because it is reality-based - the basic fact is that the human body stores calories very effectively on the one hand and burns them very efficiently on the other. That combines with the fact that our appetite doesn't adjust to compensate for dense in calorie foods. This is the awful truth. The reason Shapiro's system works is that it gives you visual information that you can use intuitively, rather than intellectual information that (for me, anyway) can be a struggle to recall and use. To put it simply, if you do what Dr. Shapiro says, you will lose weight and you will keep it off.

July 22, 2003: I only bought this book a few days ago, but already am making positive changes in what I eat. I admit that a lot of this is common sense, but to see the pictures really helps me remember what the better choices are when I am deciding on what to eat for lunch or dinner. Besides that, there are no empty promises in this book. Dr. Shapiro offers sound advice, the kind that many physicians typically provide but is often disregarded by patients.
