    Synopsis

    EVERY MAN NEEDS THIS BOOK!

Each year, more than 200,00 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. The good news is that more men are being cured of this disease than ever before.

Now in a revised second edition, this lifesaving guide by Dr. Patrick Walsh and ard-winning science writer Janet Farrar Worthington offers a message of hope to every man facing this illness. Prostate cancer is a different disease in every man—which means that the right treatment varies for each man. Giving you a second opinion from the world's top experts in surgery, pathology, urology, and radiation and medical oncology, this book helps you determine the best plan for you. Learn:

    • What causes prostate cancer—your risk factors, including heredity, diet, and environment

    • How some simple changes in your diet and lifestyle can help prevent or delay the disease

    • Why the digital rectal exam and PSA test can save your life—and when to get these tests

    • The latest treatment options: from Dr. Walsh's "nerve-sparing" radical prostatectomy to new radiation techniques, laparoscopic procedures, and new drugs that are revolutionizing treatment of advanced cancer

    • The most effective methods for maintaining continence and potency after treatment.

    Publishers Weekly

Walsh, professor of urology at Johns Hopkins University, and Worthington, a medical writer, offer a thorough guide to one of the most frightening diseases for men. Starting with an explanation of how the prostrate works surprisingly, it's not an essential organ Walsh then discusses why prostate cancer is prevalent in the U.S. and other developed Western countries, but not in Asia. He also detail the reasons men develop prostate cancer, including age, race, family history and diet. The book describes a variety of symptoms, some of which indicate ailments other than cancer, and what steps should be taken to get a proper diagnosis. Complete with diagrams and charts detailing the results of biopsy, the book provides an exceptionally complete (albeit worrisome, for squeamish readers) overview of the disease. Many of these details not taking aspirin prior to a biopsy, taking antibiotics ahead of time should obviously be included in the information doctors routinely provide to patients, but given the state of today's medical system, having such information available in this ready guide is useful and reassuring. Similarly comprehensive and easy-to-understand explanations are provided for surgical and other types of treatment, side effects, postsurgical complications and more, as well as a glossary of medical terms, along with a brief resource section. While people shouldn't use this book as a substitute for a medical check-up, it is one of the best all-inclusive books on this subject. All men and their loved ones battling or concerned about prostate cancer should read this book. (Aug. 28) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

July 21, 2009: The book went through the process of each type of treatment for Prostrate Cancer. It was written in a clear and concise language that anyone could understand. It never pointed you in any one direction or treatment to choose. It just put everything out there for you to absorb.

It told you what to expect before, during, and after the surgery. Not only does it help the patient, there is a section for the wives and caregivers also.

I highly recommend this book for anyone facing this situation. As a matter of fact, I have recommended it to the Oncology nurse at out local hospital for his Support Group.

March 09, 2009: This book was recommended to my husband and me at his diagnosis of prostate cancer. It is the most comprehensive book you will ever find to explain the workings of the prostate gland and the options for treating prostate cancer. It is written with the doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is the gold standard in this field. The author explains everything in laymen's terms, so it is easy to understand. After reading this, we went to Johns Hopkins and will have treatment there. All men should read this in order to better understand their bodies.
