    Synopsis

So my only protection is a kindergarten teacher and a ninety-eight-pound female minister....And they don't even believe I'm in danger.

As Bethany approaches her thirteenth birthday, her parents act more oddly than usual. Her mother cries constantly, and her father barely lets Bethany out of his sight. Then one morning he hustles the entire family into the car, drives across several state lines — and leaves Bethany with an aunt she never knew existed. Bethany has no idea what's going on. She's worried her mom and dad are running from some kind of trouble, but she can't find out because they won't tell her where they are going.

Bethany's only clue is a few words she overheard her father tell her aunt: "She doesn't know anything about Elizabeth." But Aunt Myrlie won't tell Bethany who Elizabeth is, and she won't explain why people in her small town react to Bethany as if they've seen a ghost. The mystery intensifies when Bethany gets a package from her father containing four different birth certificates from four different states, with four different last names — and thousands of dollars in cash. And when a strange man shows up asking questions, Bethany realizes the's not the only one who's desperate to unravel the secrets of her past.

    Annotation

Thirteen-year-old Bethany's parents have always been overprotective, but when they suddenly drop out of sight with no explanation, leaving her with an aunt she never knew existed, Bethany uncovers shocking secrets that make her question everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.

    Publishers Weekly

Haddix (the Shadow Children series) releases another suspenseful pageturner here narrated by Bethany Cole. As the novel opens, Bethany is anxious; her father has barely let her out of his sight and her mother has been weeping for months. Now, a few days before her 13th birthday, her father has put the two of them in the car, headed West. He leaves Bethany with her Aunt Myrlie and drives off with no explanation. The only clue Bethany has is what she heard her father say to her aunt, "She doesn't know anything about Elizabeth." Bethany is determined to learn why she has been left with an aunt she never knew existed, and what the mysterious Elizabeth has to do with it all. Later, Bethany appears to be in danger from a stalker-perhaps she is not the only one searching for answers. Haddix conveys Bethany's dismay and fear through believable dialogue and thoughts-the girl's growing awareness of uncanny similarities between herself and Elizabeth (their love of Froot Loops and tough vocabulary words)-and believably charts the heroine's slow warming to her aunt and cousin. Bethany's gradual feelings of anger and resentment towards her parents are particularly poignant. Haddix's timely novel raises provocative issues about what makes an individual unique, with both compassion and clarity. Ages 10-14. (Oct.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

November 02, 2009: What would you be thinking if you were fine one second and the next your father was packing you and your mother in the car and driving across several state lines? Well this is what a girl named Bethany has experienced. Her father has passed through three to four state lines and has not stopped at all. She has seen her mother in the front seat crying the whole time. She had no idea what was going on. Suddenly they were in this town that she did not recognize and was dropped off there. She was told that it is her aunt's house and that she would be staying there for a little while. All she knows is what she heard her father say to her "aunt." That is "She doesn't know about Elizabeth."Will Bethany find the truth? Who is Elizabeth?

Twelve year old Bethany is a bright minded girl who has green eyes, blonde hair and, is very tall for her age. She is happy and smart and LOVES to swim. She is strong, independent, loyal and most importantly she is respectful. She has been o.k until her father packed her and her mother in the car and has drove across several state lines. She is confused and is dropped off with a woman called "Myrlie." Myrlie is a stout and petite woman who wears glasses, has dark brown eyes and has black hair. She is the woman who Bethany was dropped off with and she has to take care of her until her parents give her the signal. Myrlie knows about this "Elizabeth" girl. Then there is Elizabeth, she is the one who causes pain and confusion in this story . She is also twelve and has blonde hair and green eyes. Elizabeth is loyal and keeps to herself. She HATES swimming. She is mentioned throughout the book.

I have to recommend this book to everyone. I loved the whole book cover to cover. Your attention will be focused on this story the whole time . There is a lot of action and suspense in this book and you will be talking to friends about this book for a long time. This book can relate somewhat to the real world. There are some parts that are unbelievable . You will love this book! This book is very good for any person but if you do not think you will like this book, go ahead and read the first page of so . This should draw you to read the rest of the book. I thought that I would not like this book myself but I loved it anyway. You should read this book.
