    Synopsis

& Previous editions of this esteemed reference, first published in 1900, are cited in Books for College Libraries, 3d ed., Guide to Reference Books, and Brandon-Hill. To make even those with an old and beloved edition crave the new one, the dictionary is in color for the first time: head words are in red with definitions in black, and 475 color line drawings, 600 color photographs, and color tables and appendices energize the contents. Some 800 new terms from alternative medicine have been added, for a total of more than 123,000 entries (with pronunciation). Appendices have been reorganized and expanded with additional material of interest to medical transcriptionists and other specialty groups. The included CD-ROM adds hundreds of thousands of medical terms to any computer's spell-checker (or 35,000 definitions to a handheld device); and buyers receive complimentary access to a complementary website. Reviewer:LouAnn Schraffenberger, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P (Univ of Illinois at Chicago School of Biomed & Health Info Mgmt)
Description:This is the 31st edition of one of the gold standards of medical dictionaries and one of the most trusted sources of medical language terms. The hardcover book includes a CD-ROM that has been updated with animations and approximately 50,000 audio phonetics. Users also have access to Dorland's website to consult with a dictionary online.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide readers with the most comprehensive reference for medical language terms. The dictionary was first published in 1900 with an update released about every three years. The updated versions are needed to keep pace with the constantly changing language of medicine. In my opinion, the book is one of the two most trusted medical dictionaries on the market today.
Audience:The audience is anyone with a desire to learn and/or improve their knowledge of medical terminology. This includes medical students and residents, nursing and allied health students, clinical coders, medical transcriptions, physicians, nurses, medical technologists, therapists of any discipline, and so on and so on. The book has an excellent preface and notes on the use of this dictionary making it extremely user-friendly.
Features:The preface states the book contains over 124,000 entries, more than any other medical dictionary, with 5,000 new entries added to this edition. It includes drug names as well as complementary and alternative medical terms. This is the second edition of the book as a full-color work and a total of 500 color illustrations were addedthis year, bringing the total illustrations to 1,500. As in the past, the lexicographers used a number of official and standard nomenclatures as guides for the dictionary's entries, such as Terminologia Anatomica, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and the United States Pharmacopoeia, to a name just a few. In appearance, the dictionary looks much the same as the previous edition published in 2003.
Assessment:This is the premier medical language dictionary. It is one of two dictionaries on the market today that set the gold standard for all others to follow. If I could have only one dictionary on my reference shelf, Dorland's would probably be it.
