This was the first ethnography that I have ever read. I did not know what to expect, as it was an assignment for an Anthropology class. Well, I was pleasently surprised. This was an account of a wonderfully colorful group of people, who live much differently than you or I, but remarkably deal with the same issues we face. This was a delightful glimps into a world that is often misunderstood.

Dr. Richard B. Lee's book titled The Dobe Ju/'hoansi beautifully depicts the tale of a cluster of indigenous people located in southern Africa and whose life and way of being can be linked to many theoretical concepts. According to Tylor, this cluster of people are representative of the lowest culture in society because it has lacked the capability of progressing like the other cultures in the world...
This classic, bestselling study of the !Kung San, foragers of the Dobe area of the Kalahari Desert describes a people's reactions to the forces of modernization, detailing relatively recent changes to !Kung rituals, beliefs, social structure, marriage and kinship system. It documents their determination to take hold of their own destinyùdespite exploitation of their habitat and relentless developmentùto assert their political rights and revitalize their communities. Use of the name Ju/'hoansi (meaning real people) acknowledges their new sense of empowerment.
