    Synopsis

When I grow up can I be sporty like you? You can do anything you set your mind to. This is NOT your average big-sister princess! This active princess plays soccer, does yoga, falls on the ice, and scrapes her knobby knees while showing her little brother how to be sporty, too. This charming story helps children see that it's okay to fall down and scrape their knees when trying something new, even when showing off for a sibling. It's the trying and the fun that count. Through belly-flops and missed baskets, our priceless princess discovers that doing your best is all that really matters, even when your little brother is tagging along.

    Children's Literature

Not only do princesses scrape their knees, this particular one contorts into yoga positions, does a less-than-graceful dive, and spins on the ice only to land flat on her delicate bottom. This rambunctious little girl and her tagalong brother bounce, dance, and whirl through the energetic text. By her words and actions, she clearly shows that princesses may stumble and fall but they get right back up again. Whimsical illustrations catch the beat of the rhyming text and each of them has the same frenetic look of the little girl. The message that trying is what really counts is obvious and the Day-Glo "Princesses Rule" ribbon attached at the end is a tacky gimmick. This does speak to the child not gifted in sports and for that reason could be a supplemental purchase.

February 06, 2007: I loved this book because it speaks to the heart of every princess, sporty or not. The message is clear: have fun while trying and you will always end up a winner. In this book even the little brother learns that when he brings his whole heart to his 'sport' he feels like a winner, big time! I recommend this book for all boys and girls because the focus is on building character, self confidence and the joy factor. Excellent.

August 03, 2006: As usual, Carmela has created an endearing story about the 'Princess' who has exciting adventures. Do Princesses Scrape Their Knees? is catchy book with cute rhymes and adorable pictures. For kids, sometimes that's the most entertaining part of a book. The princess in the story is nice to her brother and encourages him to try new things while sometimes demonstrating and falling herself. The moral of the story is good. Keep trying and don't worry if you fail. Be a good sport about it. I liked this story almost as much as Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? This is probably my favorite author of story books for little girls.
